Digital Twin project newsletter - a successful start

We are pleased to share the latest updates on the Digital Twins for Smart Manufacturing project. In this first issue, we introduce you to the Digital Twin technology, outline the goals and expected results of our project, and briefly introduce our partners.

What is Digital Twin technology?

Digital Twin technology is an innovative concept that creates a virtual copy of a physical object or system. This digital model reflects the characteristics, behavior and performance of the real object, enabling real-time monitoring, simulation and optimization. By using Digital Twins, industries can anticipate problems, optimize operations and improve decision-making processes. From manufacturing and engineering to healthcare and urban planning, Digital Twins technology is transforming various sectors by enabling innovative and efficient solutions.

Project goals

The Digital Twin for Smart Manufacturing project aims to develop and implement an advanced curriculum focused on Digital Twin technology. Our main goals include:

  1. Improving educational programs: Create a comprehensive Digital Twin technology curriculum applicable to mid- to senior-level IT and OT technicians.
  2. Bridging the skills gap: Equip future professionals with the necessary skills to meet the changing demands of the manufacturing industry.
  3. Promoting sustainable practices: Integrate sustainability principles into the curriculum to promote environmentally friendly production processes.
  4. Fostering collaboration with industry: Strengthening partnership between educational institutions and industry stakeholders to provide practical and relevant training.

Expected results

By the end of the project, we expect to achieve the following main results:

  1. Digital Twin Skill Index: A detailed index outlining the core competencies of technicians in the Digital Twin sector.
  2. Self-Assessment Tool: A digital tool to help learners assess their skills and adapt their learning paths accordingly.
  3. Modular e-learning course: A comprehensive 450-hour e-learning program covering various aspects of Digital Twin technology.
  4. Digital Twin training methodology: including a handbook for trainers to communicate the results to vocational education and training organisations, higher education and training as well as companies involved in retraining/upskilling the workforce.
  5. Digital Twins Labs: Creation of five Digital Twins labs to provide hands-on training in real-world settings.
  6. Skill Competitions: Organizing national and international competitions in order to challenge and improve the practical skills of students.
  7. “Digital Twin” Professional Profile: Based on the ESCO classification and a higher level of skills and subjects beyond the scope of traditional VET.

Together, we aim to develop education in the field of Digital Twin technologies and promote innovation in the manufacturing sector.

Presentation of the Digital Twin project

The "Digital Twin on Smart Manufacturing" project was presented at the SECOVE Congress by Stefano Antona from APRO Formazione. The event, which took place on July 2-3, 2024 in San Sebastian, brought together experts from 12 countries, discussing the challenges in the field of vocational education and training (VET) in Europe. The main discussions included the demographic decline, the attractiveness of VET for young people and its social recognition. The presentation marked an important step in promoting the project internationally and highlighted its importance for augmented reality (XR) initiatives.

A successful project in development

The activities of the Digital Twin project officially started with a kick-off meeting at the Polytechnic University of Turin at the end of May 2024. The two-day event was attended by representatives of all 11 partner organizations. The partners set a number of tasks and objectives for the coming months, including the curriculum and methodology of the training course, the content of the training module, the teaching methods and the self-evaluation forms.
