The National Natural History Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a scientific institute in Sofia and the richest natural history museum on the Balkan Peninsula. The museum preserves and promotes living and non-living nature in Bulgaria and abroad - over 1 million specimens of stuffed animals, plants and minerals. The exhibits of the National Museum of Natural History include more than 400 species of mammals, over 1,200 species of birds, numerous amphibians and reptiles, hundreds of thousands of insects and other invertebrates, as well as fossil specimens (bones, bone fragments and whole skeletons). Also, many mineral species and about 1,200 types of herbarium specimens from the flora of Bulgaria are exhibited here. The National Natural History Museum is the first and richest natural history museum on the Balkan Peninsula.
