New European initiative to support deployment of digital twin technology

In an ambitious move to renew the European manufacturing landscape, a consortium of leading educational institutions, innovative SMEs and industrial clusters from across Europe have joined forces to launch the Digital Twins for Smart Manufacturing project (Digital Twin on Smart Manufacturing).

The project aims to create a comprehensive European skills ecosystem in the field of digital twin technology. The project will deliver a comprehensive curriculum meeting the emerging professional needs of mid- to senior-level information and operations technology technicians within levels 4-8 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF). This curriculum will be available in English and 5 other European languages, including Bulgarian, which will ensure wide accessibility.

The main objective of the project is to increase the capacity of providers of educational services and vocational training to be able to adapt their offers to the dynamic requirements of the manufacturing industry. This is expected to lead to several tangible outcomes, including: 

  1. Increasing the efficiency of companies in commissioning, production and maintenance.
  2. Improved adaptability of educational and vocational training institutions to changing industry requirements.

To achieve these goals, the project will develop and disseminate a range of educational resources and tools to achieve transformation, including:

  • Digital Twin Skills Index, which describes the core competencies of technicians in the "digital twin" sector.
  • Self-assessment tool to facilitate individual learning programs based on prior experience and knowledge.
  • Modular eLearning, covering key areas such as virtual commissioning, industrial cyber security and the integration of green transition principles.
  • Comprehensive digital twin training methodology and user guide.
  • Hands-on learning opportunities through the creation of five digital twin labs.
  • Organising 5 national and 1 international skills competition to promote innovation and teamwork.

The consortium consists of 2 continuing education and training (VET) providers, 1 higher level VET provider, 2 higher education institutions, 4 SMEs, 1 industrial cluster and 1 chamber of commerce from 5 European countries - Italy, Spain, Greece , Sweden and Bulgaria. 

The project aims to facilitate the creation of a skilled workforce equipped with the latest digital twin technologies, thereby making a significant contribution to the European Green Deal, Europe's digital transformation and supporting small businesses. The creation of profiles of the professions related to "digital twins" and the issuance of micro-credits will further strengthen the long-term impact of the project on the European labor market.

About the "digital twin" concept

A "digital twin" involves the creation of a virtual model of a physical object, process or system. This digital representation is designed to accurately reflect the real-world counterpart in all its aspects, from physical properties and behavior to processes and performance. The goal is to enable simulation, analysis and control of the facility in a virtual environment, which can lead to insights and actions that improve the performance and support of the real-world counterpart.
