Digital Twin project training course - front-end experience from 5 countries

The "Digital Twin in Smart Manufacturing" project continues apace in the development of its training course aimed at preparing participants for the challenges of Industry 4.0. At the second partner meeting in Derio, Spain, the partners discussed the progress of the training modules and the key topics to be covered in the course. With over 450 hours of training, this course will provide both theoretical and practical knowledge needed to successfully implement Digital Twin technologies in industrial processes.

Core training modules

The project will offer a 10-module training course covering a wide range of topics including automation, cyber security, virtual commissioning and green technologies. Each module is carefully designed to provide learners with key skills and competencies.

  • TM1 – Introduction (60 hours)
This module covers basic topics such as PLC programming, 3D drawings and IoT integration. Participants will also receive an introduction to programming with Python and C#, to build a solid foundation for the following modules.
  • TM2 – Digital Twins (45 hours)
A theoretical module that provides an overview of Digital Twin technologies at three levels: 2D, 3D and virtual commissioning. This module prepares learners to understand the basic concepts related to digital manufacturing.
  • TM3 - Virtual Commissioning (60 hours)
Through hands-on exercises, learners will understand how virtual commissioning works and how to simulate real production scenarios before their deployment.
  • TM4 - Virtual Support (60 hours)
A theoretical module that focuses on maintaining systems through virtual models, helping learners understand how to effectively maintain equipment, even in remote settings.
  • TM5 - Business Intelligence (45 hours)
This module teaches participants how to use business intelligence tools, by improving the decision-making process through the analysis of data from Digital Twins.
  • TM6 – Virtual Environment and Artificial Intelligence (45 hours)
Participants will get to know artificial intelligence and augmented reality, learning how these technologies integrate with Digital Twin solutions.
  • TM7 - Industrial Cyber Security (45 hours)
Focusing on the critical need to protect industrial systems, this module will train students in protocols for cyber security in a Digital Twin environment.
  • TM8 – Other Technologies (45 hours)
The module explores key technologies such as robotics, reverse engineering and cloud computing, which provide important skills for modern manufacturing environments.
  • TM9 - Green Transformation (25 hours)
This module introduces participants to sustainable manufacturing practices, emphasizing the impact of Digital Twin technologies on energy efficiency, waste management and environmental protection.
  • TM10 – Entrepreneurship and creating incubators (20 hours)
This module provides knowledge on building a entrepreneurial skills, teaching participants how to create and manage startups and incubators related to Digital Twin technologies.

Practical training and future opportunities

A substantial part of the training will be provided through labs for Digital Twin, which will offer participants the opportunity to simulate real industrial processes in a secure virtual environment. This will provide practical experience that can be directly applied in the workplace.

After completing the course, participants will have the opportunity to take on a variety of roles in industrial manufacturing, automation, cyber security and sustainable technology. They will be able to lead projects in companies that apply modern technologies for optimization of production processes and sustainable development.

Next steps

As the development of the training modules progresses, it is planned pilot testing in 2025, which will allow for course evaluation and feedback from participants. In addition, they will be held skill competitions, which will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the acquired knowledge in real conditions.
